NeUROHAB - AN exercise program to reduce back pain

What is NeuroHAB

The NeuroHAB Back Pain Rehabilitation Program is built on the principle of addressing the functional causes of pain, rather than merely treating symptoms.

While conventional approaches—such as physiotherapy, exercise, stretching, strengthening, manual therapy, adjustments, acupuncture, injections, and medications—can help manage symptoms, they often fall short of delivering lasting relief. This is because symptom-focused treatments do not resolve the root issue.

The true underlying cause of chronic back pain is Movement Dysfunction. Modern lifestyles, marked by convenience and prolonged inactivity, erode our ability to move functionally—impacting mobility, coordination, and strength. This decline leads to maladaptive movement patterns that disrupt the motor control systems of the central nervous system.

For this reason, NeuroHAB prioritises restoring the nervous system’s control over movement. By retraining functional movement patterns, the program aims to reduce back pain at its source.

NeuroHAB Program Overview

NeuroHAB is a structured 6-week rehabilitation program designed to restore functional movement and reduce back pain. Participants attend two sessions per week, complemented by home-based exercises on non-session days to reinforce progress and promote long-term change.

Before beginning the program, each participant undergoes a comprehensive initial assessment, which includes:

  • A detailed medical history review
  • A functional movement screening
  • A pain questionnaire

If you have previously undergone spinal imaging (e.g., X-rays, MRIs), please bring those results to your assessment appointment so that we have a better understanding of the cause of your back pain.

Referral Pathways

You can join the NeuroHAB program through any of the following referral options:

  • General Practitioner (GP) via a Chronic Care Management Plan (CCMP) Recommended for at least two sessions: initial and final assessments
  • General Practitioner (GP) via WorkCover
  • Specialist Referral from your surgeon
  • Allied Health Referral eg physio, podiatrist, osteopath, chiropractor
  • Self-Referral No formal referral required—simply contact us to get started

Do you answer yes to any of these questions?

  • Are you committed to attending 2 sessions per week for 6 weeks and completing home exercises on non-session days?
  • Have you experienced chronic back pain that has not responded to conventional treatments like physiotherapy, medication, or manual therapy?
  • Are you open to learning and applying new movement strategies that target the nervous system's control of movement?
  • Do you feel that surgery would be your next option but don't want to have surgery because of the risks?

Then you may want to know more as to how we can help reduce your back pain and improve your movement through NeuroHAB.
